Indoor Fountain Maintenance Tips

Keep your indoor fountains flowing for many years ~

Indoor fountains require very little care and maintenance to keep operating for many years of enjoyment. Your main concerns will be keeping the water at the appropriate level and performing a regular thorough cleaning every 3 - 4 months.

Maintaining Water Level
When you first set up your indoor fountain, watch the water level carefully to note the amount of evaporation. Every location will have a different evaporation rate according to the surrounding humidity level. You may be surprised at how quickly the water in your fountain evaporates, particularly in the dry winter season.

Keep the water level as high as possible for best pump operation. If the motor seems to get louder, it may mean it is having to work harder to draw water—a sign that it needs more water. If you will be away longer that a couple of days, shut the indoor fountain off, otherwise it is best to leave the fountain running all the time.

Changing Water in Indoor Fountains
Siphon the water out of your indoor fountain after a month to check level of sediment or deposits. It should not be necessary to take the fountain apart. Dust, hair and lint will collect in the base of the fountain, pulled from the air by moving water. One of the worst offenders is pet hair. Thoroughly clean out any debris and noticeable deposits and refill with clean water.

Add a few drops of bleach to the fountain water to inhibit algae growth. Additives are available to prevent the growth of algae or mold in water fountains. Be sure to check the labelling to determine if the products are safe to use around pets that may drink water from the indoor fountain.

Regular Cleaning of Indoor Fountains
Once every 3 - 4 months your indoor fountain should be carefully taken apart and throroughly cleaned. Follow the instructions that came with your fountain to dis-assemble and clean all parts of the fountain. Generally, you will remove any loose pieces such as stones, crystals, shells or wood and remove the base or bowl. Remember these parts may be slippery, so handle carefully over a safe surface. Clean the bowl thoroughly and set aside. Remove the hose from the pump, clean and rinse. If your fountain has propellers, remove the cover and clean propellers. Clean residue from all accessible parts of the pump and re-assemle your indoor water fountain. Carefully follow manufacturer's instructions for re-starting your fountain to avoid splashing.

That's it ~ with regular maintenance you will enjoy your indoor fountain for many years.
