Outdoor Fountain Maintenance
Winter Maintenance of Outdoor Fountains
Many outdoor and garden fountains are made of concrete which will expand and contract with temperature changes. It is important to take some steps to prepare your outdoor fountain for the winter season to avoid damage from seasonal weather.
If your outdoor fountain can be moved inside to a garden shed or garage, be sure drain all water and clean all debris from the fountain before moving indoors. Be sure to store in a secure, dry location on a level surface.
If you cannot move your outdoor fountains indoors in the winter, follow these steps:
- Remove pump from water fountain and take indoors.
- Fill fountains bowls with burlap bags or any type of material that will protect them from freezing temperatures
- Remove fountain planters and birdbaths, and store inside if possible. If not, remove plants for winter storage and wrap planters and birdbaths to protect from freezing
- Cover the entire fountain - do not leave any surface exposed.
Warm Weather Maintenance of Outdoor Fountains
- Keep all debris such as dirt, leaves or grass out of outdoor fountains.
- Clean at least once a week.
- Clear pump of any debris that may accumulate around outdoor fountain.
- Use a capful of bleach or special fountain products in the water to keep algae from forming. Be sure to check labels of products to make sure they are pet safe.
