Water Fountains ~ what you need to know

How do Water Fountains Work?

Most water fountains are self-contained. The water is kept in the pan or basin, and there is a small, electric pump which circulates the water to the top, out of the water dispersement and down an exterior surface of the fountain.

It is extremely important to follow the assembly instructions that come with your water fountain. Although the mechanisms are similar, your fountain may have specific requirements for assembly, start-up and operation, in order to enjoy your fountains safely and problem-free. If the water level is not maintained, the fountain pump may burn out.

Water

Distilled water is often recommended for water fountains, but some information suggests, particularly if you are interested in natural health issues, that distilled water has lost its proper structure . Tap water can be used, but the calcium and minerals in the water will eventually solidify on the copper, slate, and parts of the pump. The water should be changed completely when the fountain is cleaned every 3-4 months. Because water fountains act as natural humidifiers, the amount of water you will need to add daily will depend on how dry the air is and what type of fountains you have. It is best to add a little water every day rather than adding large amounts every few days. Refer to the instructions that come with each fountain for optimum water levels.

Products are available that can be added to the water to aid in keepin git clean and free from bacteria. You may also add sea salt or hydrogen peroxide to prevent algae growth. One benefit of copper fountains is the natural ability of copper to keep bacteria, mold, or mildew from growing in the water fountain.

Pumps

Water fountain pumps vary in size and features. Some pumps have filters that may need to be cleaned and some have adjustments for water pressure or flow. Pumps will have the longest life span if they are allowed to run continuously. If maintained properly, pumps can perform over a period of several years.

Pumps are submersible, and MUST be used while completely submersed in water. The water cools the pump and maintains the proper operating temperature. Low water levels, frequently turning the fountain off and on, or poor fountain maintenance will contribute to a shorter pump life span.
